Quality Control Technician

Job Summary

The Quality Control Technician is responsible for quality control testing, reporting and evaluation of construction products for conformance to job specifications. This individual will perform field and laboratory testing.

Compensation

$30.76-$38.45 per hour | DOE

Responsibilities

  • Test and inspect concrete mixes and make field adjustments to maintain specifications
  • Prepare laboratory trial mixtures
  • Coordinate work with other regional management personnel, such as Sales, Operations, Customer Service and Dispatch to better serve the customer
  • Weigh samples and check sizes; take slump and air test for specification compliance
  • Maintain clear and accurate records on products quality and activities
  • Accurately enter field and lab reports on test data and activities into computer
  • Assist with trial batches (i.e. preparing and weighing up material, running applicable ACI tests, etc.)
  • Perform all aspects of stripping, curing, capping and compression testing
  • Report concrete cylinder strength tests according to ACI standards
  • Handle and provide solutions for project problems and complaints
  • Track aggregate graduations and mix adjustments
  • Provide job site quality control and quality assurance as related to ready mix concrete slump, air, unit weight
  • Support delivery and customer service in the field; professionally resolve customer complaints

  • Troubleshoot job problems and handle job complaints (out-of-spec aggregates, low breaks, Schmidt hammer, cracking, coring)
  • Analyze aggregate and strength reports and identify trends
  • Work directly with suppliers, vendors, and internal customers, as necessary

Education

  • High school diploma/GED
  • DOT Soils and Aggregate Certification 
  • ACI Strength Testing Certification and ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Safety Sensitive position
  • Obtain and maintain the following:
    • ACI  Aggregate and ACI Concrete Strength Testing (within six (6) months in position)
  • Job requires the following motions: climbing, bending, squatting, lifting, sitting, stretching, vibration, twisting, pushing/pulling of controls, and riding on rough terrain, use of hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers, driving/walking on uneven ground, and climbing stairs
  • Frequent lifting up to 75 pounds, occasional lifting of 100 pounds
  • May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather and be able to work in wet environments
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with varying start and stop times
  • Overtime work will be required as needed by the company
  • Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
  • ANSI-approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
  • Able to work cooperatively with others
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable
  • Technician subject to random drug and alcohol screens as required by the company
  • May be required to perform Field Technician duties based on business need

Preferred:

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite and SAP software
  • 1 + years previous experience in a concrete QC field environment and/or lab environment
  • Certifications in ACI Field Grade I, ACI Lab I & II, ACI Strength Testing, and ACI Aggregates testing

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Federal Motor Carrier(FMCSA) regulated and Safety Sensitive positions require ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
