Sr. Project Engineer

Job Summary

The Sr. Project Engineer will support the functions of the Engineering Department by independently applying extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas related to their engineering discipline. This individual will manage engineering projects from budget, conception, design, procurement, installation, and follow-up.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently to support functions within the Engineering and/or plant departments
  • Participate and contribute to the preparation and implementation of the capital budget process 
  • Define the scope of work for projects, including justifications, conceptual designs, securing bids and estimates from suppliers, vendors and contractors, as well as forecasting cost savings
  • Manage assigned projects including design, calculations, conceptual sketches, submission of general arrangement drawings as well as functional construction drawings for failed components, damaged structures, or equipment repairs 
  • Ensure project costs are managed and controlled within the assigned budget
  • Supervise projects; research and specify equipment and components as solutions, write specifications/contracts/requisitions, solicit bids and make recommendations to Purchasing
  • Supervise and coordinate contractors and/or plant personnel with the start-up of projects/work orders 
  • Instruct personnel on operation and maintenance of new equipment, set-up equipment files for associated projects, recommend parts to the maintenance department
  • Support plant in technical matters which include troubleshooting equipment, evaluating damage and failure of structures or mobile and stationary equipment, critical path scheduling, material selections, strength and mathematical calculations, etc.
  • Write technical reports as required
  • Maintain department files for reference
  • Interpret and apply regulations or codes as required, including AISC, AWWA, IEEE, OSHA, MSHA, UPC, UBC, NFPA, NEC, Clean Water Act and other state and federal regulations
Education

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Registered Professional Engineer is required for civil and structural disciplines
  • Minimum of 7 years or more working in a heavy industrial engineering, cement, mining or manufacturing setting
  • Civil Engineer: experience with site plans - plant coordinates, surveying, concrete design, utility distribution - facilities management, water quality, plant paving, water drainage, process flow & material handling, project management
  • Mechanical Engineer: experience with HVAC system design (associated ducts and piping), dust collection and vent piping designs with current industry practices, process flow and material handling, conveying design per CEMA, piping systems including water quality per AWWA and state/federal regulations, power transmission design - gear box selection, fan design and selection, project management
  • Structural Engineer: experience in concrete and steel framing design including CAD drawings, calculations for structural projects as a Registered Engineer, site surveying and plant coordinate system, soil evaluation and plant paving design, evaluation of damaged or failed structures/supervise repairs, project management
  • Ability to quickly assess engineering problems and research/offer solutions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • AutoDesk, AutoCad experience in creating construction drawings for contractors
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to discuss technical subjects
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure/deadlines

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of safety, environmental and building regulations 
  • Previous experience in the construction materials industry with knowledge of material handling processes and equipment 
  • Ability to perform survey tasks for site plans, grading for drainage
