Project Engineer

Job Summary

Primarily provides project management and engineering support to the Rillito Cement Plant by applying engineering principles and practices in a variety of areas. Manages engineering projects from conception through close out and assists other departments in creating long-term solutions to difficult problems.

Responsibilities

  • Work both independently and as a group to support functions of the Engineering Department and the overall plant.
  • Participate and run project meetings within the engineering department and with various plant departments.
  • Monitors projects to see that they meet goals, specifications, quality, budget, shcedule and performaance guarantees.
  • Maintains and develops reports regarding the CalPortland Energy Savings Program.
  • Manage assigned projects including design, calculations, conceptual sketches, submit drawings of general arrangement and functional construction drawings for failed components, damgaed structures or equipment repairs as defined by plant work orders
  • Project costs are to be managed and controlled within assigned budget.
  • Supervise and check details, research and specify equipment and components as solutions, writes specifications/contracts/requisitions, solicits bids and makes recommendations to Purchasing.
  • Supervise and coordinate contractors or plant personnel with installation and/or start-up of projects/work orders
  • Instructs personnel on operation and maintenance of new equipment, setting up euipment files for associated projects, and recommending spare parts to maintenance department.
  • Supports plant in technical matters as assigned, including troubleshooting equipment, evaluating damage and failure of structures or mobile and stationary equipment, critical path scheduling, material selections, strength and mathematical calculations, etc.
  • Maintain plant documentation and assist in fulfulling documentation requests, as needed.
  • Perform any special assignments or duties, as directed.
  • Ensure that projects are executed safely per MSHA regulations, prevailing safety standards, and CPC requirements.
  • Interpret and apply regulations or codes as required, including AISC, AWWA, IEEE, OSHA, MSHA, UPC, UBC, NFPA, NEC, Clean Water Act and other state and federal regulations.

Education

Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Structural Engineering

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Must be highly motivated and be a self-starter
  • Must have strong leadership and communications skills
  • Must be able to understand engineering drawings and plans and be able to work under pressure and resolve problems as they arise.
  • Ability to quickly assess engineering problems and research/offer solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • AutoDesk AutoCad functional experience to create completed construction drawings for contractors.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to discuss technical matters and collaborate with various plant departments.
  • Ability to multi-task with conflicting priorities and work under pressure.

Preferred: 

  • 3 years or more working in heavy industrial, cement, mining, and manufacturing setting.
  • Knowledge of safety, environmental and building regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, material handling processes, equipment and its applications for suitable solutions for assigned tasks.
  • Abilty to perform survey tasks for site plans, grading for drainage.
  • Arizona Registered Professional Engineer or EIT working towards a PE.
