The Database Administrator (DBA) role is a key position within the Information Technology, Infrastructure team at CalPortland. This individual will oversee the implementation, configuration, optimization, and maintenance of critical database systems that support our business applications. The role involves managing a diverse range of databases, including those developed in partnership with third-party vendors, custom in-house solutions, and integrated off-the-shelf software. The DBA will play a pivotal role in ensuring database performance, availability, and security. Responsibilities include providing real-time issue resolution, enhancing database functionality, delivering custom analysis and reporting, and supporting integration requirements across platforms. Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain a portfolio of 20+ SQL Server databases, ensuring reliability and scalability
- Configure and optimize database servers, processes, and associated systems to meet business needs
- Proactively monitor database performance and system health to ensure seamless operations
- Maintain high standards of performance, availability, sustainability, and security across all databases
- Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in real time, minimizing downtime and impact
- Provide recommendations for process improvements and technical solutions to enhance performance
- Automate routine tasks, track system performance, and maintain comprehensive documentation
- Collaborate with development teams to refine database schemas and optimize query performance
- Deliver 24/7 support for critical production environments, ensuring uninterrupted service
- Execute scheduled maintenance tasks and support release deployment activities outside standard hours
Education
Bachelor's degree
Requirements/Qualifications
- Experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator or a similar role (5+ years)
- Proven expertise in performance tuning and optimization (3+ years)
- Strong proficiency in database backup, restoration, and recovery models (3+ years)
- Advanced critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Hands-on experience in SQL Server migrations and upgrades
- Familiarity with Azure SQL Database and Managed Instances is a significant advantage
- Experience with Oracle databases is a plus
- Knowledge of SAP Basis administration is a plus
- Flexibility and availability to support production systems outside regular working hours
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
