Laboratory Technician II

Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for sample preparation in addition to assisting with quality assurance testing of construction materials for conformance to industry specifications.

  • Assist laboratory personnel on duties that pertain to sampling, preparation, and testing of cement, concrete, and aggregates
  • Perform sample preparations and standard quality tests on Portland cement, concrete, and aggregate (in accordance with the most current ASTM and AASHTO standards)
  • Maintain clear and accurate records on test and quality data
  • Accurately enter data, lab reports, and activities into computer
  • Assist with cement physical testing (i.e. preparing, weighing material, and cleanup, etc.)
  • Assist with concrete trial batches (i.e. preparing, weighing material, and cleanup, etc.)
  • Prepare aggregate graduations for laboratory concrete trials in addition to aggregate testing
  • Assist with stripping, curing, capping and compression testing
  • Support customer service technicians with the delivery of samples arriving at the laboratory
  • Disposal of samples into appropriate waste containers as needed

  Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related college degree


  • Job requires the following motions: climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, occasional lifting of 100 pounds, stretching, sitting, walking on uneven ground and stairs
  • Able to work cooperatively with others
  • Overtime work will be required as needed
  • Must meet OSHA 10 guidelines and be able to follow all CalPortland Safety Policies
  • ANSI approved PPE will be provided and must be used when required
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English


  • 2 + years of previous experience in a QA/QC laboratory environment
  • Certifications in ACI Laboratory I & II, ACI Strength Testing, ACI Field Grade I, or ACI Aggregates testing
  • If no current certifications, you will be required to obtain ACI Laboratory Concrete Testing and ACI Strength Testing Technician within 12 months of hire date (at the company’s expense)

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require FMCSA regulated on-going drug and alcohol testing.
