Quality Control Laboratory Supervisor
Job Summary
The QC Supervisor will oversee daily laboratory operations for their assigned division. This lab is accredited by the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Caltrans in Aggregates, Asphalt, and Concrete. The QC Supervisor shall maintain AASHTO: resource/CCRL national accreditation by following R18 and C1077 standards and Caltrans accreditation following Caltrans’ requirements. They will manage the lab to maintain the high quality and level of service expected by our customers, all while providing guidance and direction to QC personnel. This individual will review project specifications and recommend mixture designs.

Responsibilities
- Manage lab technicians’ daily duties and assist the Quality Control Manager in managing all control activities
- Maintain a continuing program for personal self-improvement and development
- Provide technical assistance in solving field problems involving asphalt, concrete, aggregates, and related products
- Interact with Federal, State, and Local agencies on products supplied by CalPortland
- Review project specifications and recommend mix designs
- Prepare project submittals; articipate in pre-bidding preparation
- Review project specifications and recommend mix designs to the Sales Department to quote jobs
- Prepare project Submittals
- Maintain lab housekeeping as well as inventory control
- Coordinate work with other regional management personnel, i.e. Sales, Operations, Customer Service, Dispatch, to better serve the customer
- Attend pre-job meetings and provide input on issues that may impact product quality
- Conduct testing per applicable (ASTM, AASHTO, Caltrans, etc.) test methods
- Assist with trial batches (i.e. preparing and weighing up material, performing applicable tests, etc.)
- Enter data into StonemontQC (i.e. mix designs, break results, etc.)
- Prepare and analyze reports (i.e., compressive strength, gradations, etc.) to optimize mix performance
- Handle and provide solutions for project problems and complaints
- Keep current on lab certification(s)
- Maintain equipment and calibrations for lab and field equipment
- Obtain and maintain all necessary ACI, OSHA, and MSHA certifications: CCRL/AASHTO: resource Proficiency and Inspections
Education
Bachelor's degree in Concrete Industry Management, Civil Engineering (preferred) or related field, or minimum 5 years of experience
Requirements/Qualifications
- Safety Sensitive Position
- Working knowledge of asphalt, concrete, and aggregate testing with respect to current ASTM, AASHTO, and ODOT/WSDOT
- Previous supervisory experience
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions; may be exposed to extremes of hot and cold weather
- Strong communication skills: ability to motivate and influence others
- Must understand the basics of asphalt, concrete, and aggregate production
- Well-versed in Microsoft Office basics (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Strong math, analytical and attention to detail
- Must be able to work cooperatively with others
- Physically able to: climb, bend, squat, lift, stretch, drive, ride, vibrate, twist, and ride on rough terrain
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Experience using hand tools: wrenches and screwdrivers, etc.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and clean DMV record
- Occasional irregular hours; nights and weekends may be required
- Appropriate American Concrete Institute (ACI) and ODOT/WSDOT certifications preferred
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Safety Sensitive and FMCSA-regulated require ongoing drug and alcohol testing.
