Cement Laboratory Intern

Job Summary

The Cement Laboratory Intern procures samples from areas throughout the plant, prepares samples for physical testing and/or chemical analysis, conducts all physical testing and analysis, and operates any process control equipment systems used during performance of the regular quality control function.

Compensation

$17.50/hr-$24.00/hr DOE 

Responsibilities

  • Exhibits and maintains safe work and environmental compliance practices while performing tasks
  • Procures required samples from plant or quarry locations, transports the samples to the laboratory and prepares the samples for analytical or physical testing
  • Analyzes a wide range of materials, calculates required information and records findings of information using data processing systems
  • Prepares standard solutions for use in chemical analysis and conducts plant control tests
  • Sets-up and performs designated tests throughout the plant as necessary
  • Conducts sieve analysis and other designated procedures on raw or other process-related materials
  • Makes routine calculations necessary to perform duties including computations using standardized algebraic formulas
  • Manually records test results
  • Observes general Laboratory safety rules, uses appropriate procedures and safety equipment when handling chemicals
  • Advises management as to test results which effect operational parameters and necessary corrections to operations
  • Keeps equipment in laboratory clean and in orderly conditions; performs clean-up duties in all areas of the plant
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education

Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field. 

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must pass a written laboratory exam
  • Proficiency with computers is required
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Customer service orientation
  • Must be proficient at reading, writing, math and operational logic
  • Ability to produce accurate and timely statistics
  • Ability to learn and comply with all plant, company, and MSHA safety rules and regulations
  • Physical requirements: sitting, standing, stooping and bending for long periods of time (up to 8 hrs.), climbing, lifting up to 70 lbs., and crawling under and into enclosed spaces
  • Walk on all types of surfaces (uneven and/or slippery ground)
  • Physical ability to climb on equipment
  • Must work in all weather conditions: heat, cold, wet, dry and/or dusty conditions and near hot kiln process
  • Ability to work in surroundings that include heat, dust, vibration, heights and confined spaces
  • Exposure to cement, clay, limestone and various chemicals
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or cement facility preferred

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require FMCSA regulated on-going drug and alcohol testing.
