Safety Intern

Job Summary

The Safety Intern will ensure the health, safety and welfare of personnel by implementing and enforcing plant policies, rules and regulations of MSHA, OSHA, and Environmental Protection Agencies and Workers Compensation Law.

Compensation

$20.00-$24.00/hr DOE 

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations concerning safety and with company safety policies and practices
  • Train employees and supervisors in best safety practices, policies and procedures
  • Perform and document site inspections, employee safety meetings, new hire safety orientations, job hazard analysis and monthly safety committee meetings
  • Assist in the development of job hazard analysis
  • Oversee and attend MSHA inspections, review citations, close out conferences and litigation of citations
  • Perform filing of MSHA quarterly reports, notice of injury, return-to-duty in timely manner
  • Update or modify MSHA site specific training and MSHA training plans as necessary
  • Investigate motor vehicle accidents and refer employees for post-accident drug and alcohol screening
  • Prepare safety reports for management outlining trends for motor vehicle accidents, near misses, first aid injuries, and medically treated injuries
  • Oversee annual chemical inventory at each plant location and assist in maintaining Safety Data Sheets
  • Conduct internal onsite inspections to ensure safety and health requirements are maintained in accordance to state and federal regulations and company safety policies and programs
  • Assist in conducting safety training for all plant personnel
  • Investigate all accidents/close calls, write reports and implement corrective measures
  • Assist in conducting new employee orientations
  • Maintain records of safety performance and regularly report results and trends to management
  • Document and assist with Safety Meetings

Education

Currently pursuing a BS Degree in Safety or related field

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of MSHA, OSHA and other agency regulations
  • Must work effectively in a team environment
  • Must be able to teach, mentor and motivate others
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, i.e. Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Knowledge of first aid procedures
  • Prefer experience in heavy highway, mining and transportation
  • Demonstrate good understanding of key safety principles in the construction and mining industry
  • Work effectively and respond quickly under pressure situations
  • Strong leadership abilities
  • Must be organized and willing to travel

Preferred:

  • Prior work experience or internship in a mining/construction materials environment
  • EMT training a plus

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require FMCSA regulated on-going drug and alcohol testing.
