Director of Technical Services

Job Summary

The Director of Technical Services will run the daily Northwest laboratory operations for cement and concrete, maintaining AMRL/CCRL national accreditation by following R18 and C1077 standards, manage lab technicians’ daily duties, and manage sampling program for Northwest cement terminals. Work closely with State DOT’s to ensure multiple cement sources are approved and maintained on the approved materials lists. Additionally, will provide quality technical service functions to CalPortland’s customer base in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Western Canada. This individual must be highly proactive in order to maintain and/or create cement sales opportunities with contractors, state, and county public works agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure AMRL/CCRL Performance Sample Program (PSP) for aggregates and concrete are completed and submitted to these agencies before deadlines
  • Maintain equipment and calibrations at specified intervals for laboratory and field equipment, assists in annual outside calibrations
  • Maintain Cement Quality Procedure Manual
  • Keep current on lab certification(s)
  • Maintain lab housekeeping as well as inventory control according to monthly budget parameters
  • Assist with trial batches (i.e. preparing and weighing up material, running applicable ACI tests, etc.)
  • Schedule Field and Lab Technicians daily duties
  • Oversee quarterly cement testing
  • Strong technical interaction with customers and potential customers, intra-company personnel, sales, and promotional and technical associations
  • Become familiar with cement performance and quality, both chemically and physically at each location, where cement is produced or distributed
  • Communicate customer problems, needs, and future opportunities effectively with sales and operations personnel
  • Work with various agencies on specifications
  • Provide technical updates and/or training to sales and operations personnel as needed
  • Interact with the Central Laboratory personnel to perform customer service testing such as evaluation of their raw materials with our various cements or experimental testing of products
  • Interact with management regarding cement quality, new products, changes in specifications, product uses, etc. 
  • Attend quality control meetings at cement plants and provide feedback to plant on customer quality needs/comments
  • Travel required in OR, WA, AK, ID, and Western Canada

Education

Degree in Concrete Management, Civil Engineering (preferred) or related field, or minimum 5 years experience

Requirements/Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of technical services experience in the cement/concrete industry and/or construction materials industry
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Strong communication skills: ability to motivate and influence others
  • Must understand the basics of cement and concrete and production
  • Well-versed in Microsoft Office basics (i.e., Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Strong math, analytical, and attention to details skills
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to spontaneously discuss industry, market, and product knowledge in a variety of audiences
  • Strong formal presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to influence and drive decision-making as appropriate
  • Team-player both internally and externally  
  • Clean driving record (for last five years)

Preferred:

  • Experience with public entities (state, county, city governments, etc.)
  • Background in construction and/or manufacturing of construction products
